Re: Luis Suarez Banned for 8 Premier League Games
lol this is so, so, so, stupid.
calling someone negrito in latin america = not racist
calling someone "little black guy" in england = not racist
calling someone negrito in england = racist ???
has it been confirmed that suarez called him "negrito" and not something else that actually is racially derogatory? otherwise this seems like a bunch of fuss over nothing.

negrito isn't "little black guy" anyway... there's no possible translation, the closest thing to it is probably "mate"...

Really....Quite disappointing.
I'll give my thoughts in due time until then, ICS, Josh, Che, PS, Sep and the rest.
Job well done.
If you ever lived in Argentina or Uruguay you'd know that "negrito" is a common nickname and not a racist slur. People here expect everyone to know english speaking countries culture, but would not make a single try to understand others'
even if he made that comment in the Uruguayan league, surely you still wouldn't expect us to support him do you?
Not support him but understand what he meant.
u can try and understand someone who deliberately calls a black person "negrito"...
not understand the person. But understand the meaning of the word. why is it so difficult to understand that some words that are considered racist and offensive in some countries are not. The world is does not only revolves around english speaking countries. In spanish "negro" means black. "negrito" is the diminutive form of that word. And in Rioplatense spanish (of Argentina and Uruguay") the word is used as a nickname regardless of race and without any insulting connotations.
I wonder how it would feel if Rooney was running around a black Liverpool player and saying "Hey Black dude, black dude"
after all
negrito = black and no harm
so black = English term for the color according to some...
black dude is specifically used in the english language to refer to someone of a distinctive race.
"Negrito" in Argentina and Uruguay is not. You can call that a chinese guy, a swedish guy or someone from any race. It makes no difference.
And even in your hipothetical case it really doesn't seem offensive to me. Maybe in england it would be i don't know.
so Suarez forgot Evra's name? am sure he calls Johnson "negrito" too at training...
People use nicknames even if they know the other person name.
And Suarez could perfectly call johnson "negrito". It's not meant to be about race. You could be blonde and with blue eyes and no color in your skin and you would still be called negrito in argentina.

Re: Luis Suarez Banned for 8 Premier League Games
from wiki
The Negrito are a class of several ethnic groups who inhabit isolated parts of Southeast Asia.[1]
Their current populations include 12 Andamanese peoples of the Andaman Islands, six Semang peoples of Malaysia, the Mani of Thailand, and the Aeta, Agta, Ati, and 30 other peoples of the Philippines. Reports from British traders also speak of negrito people on Borneo (Sarawak). (Journal of the Malayan Branch Royal Asiatic Society, Vol. XXIX, part 1, 1956)
Negritos share some common physical features with African pygmy populations, including short stature, natural afro-hair texture, and dark skin; however, their origin and the route of their migration to Asia is still a matter of great speculation. They are the most genetically distant human population from Africans at most loci studied thus far (except for MC1R, which codes for dark skin).
They have also been shown to have separated early from Asians, suggesting that they are either surviving descendants of settlers from an early migration out of Africa, commonly referred to as the Proto-Australoids, or that they are descendants of one of the founder populations of modern humans.[2]
The term "Negrito" is the Spanish diminutive of negro, i.e. "little black person", referring to their small stature, and was coined by early European explorers.[3]
Occasionally, some Negritos are referred to as pygmies, bundling them with peoples of similar physical stature in Central Africa, and likewise, the term Negrito was previously occasionally used to refer to African Pygmies.[4]

That's what I've been trying to tell, but nobody seems to care.
Literally it does mean little black, coloquially though It simply means dude, mate or fellow.

i'm not against political correction. People should be respectful. Specially about sensitive topics such as race.
The thing is that "negrito" is not a racial slur by any strech of the word.
