Against anyone half decent no he can't, there's a difference between playing a position well and being able to play it.

It's not a coincidence that since he joined you that you have been a lot weaker defensively and Barca have got a lot stronger defensively.

Mourinho has already seen this by playing him behind Costa against anyone decent and he'll to continue to do so..... Hell you said yourself that during Everton he was constantly dispossessed in the midfield lol, that doesn't happen to good CMs.

He's a fantastic player but let's not paint him out to be something he isn't, even when he plays CM his biggest contributions come in and around the box because by nature that's what type of player he is.

TL;DR Stahp.

Considering that his only saving grace was his stats, not really. When he didn't produce any stat, all he ever was for us was being a defensive liability.

And actually, while I at first was quite annoyed with how little we sold Fabregas for, considering what we payed for Rakitic and how well he has been playing, I have zero regrets. As I am sure that 99% of the Barca fans feel the same.

You do know Fabregas played in his normal position in the toughest fixture we'll face all season right? He was excellent defensively against City. Disciplined, used the ball intelligently, tracked runners, won tackles etc.

Outstanding in that game in a fixed role. You don't know what you're talking about I'm afraid.

Why are Barca fans getting angry in this thread? Iniesta and Rakitic are far better fits in your system, I've already admitted as such. Fabregas by far the better player in terms of ability, the best player in the League so far.

Cesc is one of the best assisters in the world, i've admitted it but in terms of overall CM he is far from the best, and one stat such as the one you provided doesn't equate to being a great centermid...
glad he works really well for chelsea in terms of getting goals, but i am also more glad he left barca.

Costa finishes either of the two chances he created and you would be singing a different tune.

Fact is everyone was posting a clip of Neville's MNF segment on him. Words like liability, undisciplined, overeager etc were thrown about ad-nauseam and apparently Jose would never play him in that position in a big game.

A week later he trusts Cesc enough to play him in a midfield 2 in the toughest fixture we will face all season and he did his job admirably. It was only until Zabaleta was sent off that he was pushed forward into #10 to get the 3 points.

You can claim we were parking the bus or whatever the fact is he played him there. We were set up to get a point or nick a goal on the counter. Cesc stuck to his task perfectly. City created *bleep* all until he was moved further forward.

Nah, he was invisable. There was no different tune to make.

You can twist the facts all you like but that video was exactly right.

Cesc cant play center midfield in any big game if Chelsea are trying to play progressive football.

Park the bus, sit in your own half and not even try and play football...anyone can do that. Hell, Lampard played in cm vs Barcelona doing that.

While he wasn't the best against City, I'm shocked that none of you have noticed he was one of the biggest reasons Silva was quiet throughout that game. And as Gil pointed out, if Costa had converted both or either of the chances he created, I'm pretty sure the tone would be a lot different in here.

We were pegged back by City most of that game. I'm pretty sure we didn't set up to only defend in that game as we tried to come out a number of times but kept getting intercepted and pegged back(fair play to Pellegrini).

Bottom line is, this was a GREAT deal for both Chelsea and Barca.

I heard some guy talking in a video the other day who said individual defending skill is not that important a parameter anyway as it's all about which space you have to defend, and he gave examples of other great CM/DMs who 'can't defend' hmm
