Okay... Let's say Rooney was going for the ball. Check out the motion on his two "tackle" attempts. It looks like he trying to strike the ball from outside the box. It's absolutely ridiculous. the ball was halted between Colo's leg's. There's absolutely no reason to go after the ball like that. THIS is what people are mad about. If he had attempted to acquire the ball like any other player in the Premier League, or 99% of sane people, the motion would have been shorter and faster, meaning he PROBABLY WOULD HAVE WON THE BALL.
