This thread will be unlocked again when I'm convinced that A) people can stay on topic and B) people can avoid unnecessary and unhelpful league vs league and player vs player nonsense.

Re: Luiz Suarez
Pretty pointless last couple of pages.
Also with his 4 goals Suarez has broken into Top 34 all time goal scorers for LFC with 64.
Also passes Fernando Torres in hattricks. El Nino bagged only 4 hattricks in his time at Liverpool. Suarez now has 5 same as Gerrard.

if he scores 17 more goals for the rest of the season, he'll surpass Torres' goal tally for his 3.5 year at LFC (Same with Suarez time frame), despite having missed 20 games !!! through suspension

Still surprising how Suarez cost 13m less than Carroll in that window.

And Torres is 19th in our all time scorers list, would be great if Luisito passes him.

Re: Luiz Suarez
You guys do realise Torres was ridiculously injury prone before the Chelsea move right. Why do you think his decline has been so drastic?
As great as Suarez is, that Torres 07-08 season was something special indeed. Hell, if he didn't miss like 15 games in 08/09 they would have easily walked the League that year.
He also scored like 18 in 20 starts in 09/10 then he just fell apart after the WC.
Man can't even score putbacks these days. I would have retired a long time ago if I were him.

Re: Luiz Suarez
Throughout our history, dating up to the start of the 20th century, we've always had at least 1 forward (and many times 2 guys) that you could consider a top striker as they were notching up 20-25+ goals a season. So no surprise really.Great Leader Sprucenuce wrote:I know you have such a great history but i'm surprised he's that low tbh.
A little history lesson
- Sam Raybould and Jack Parkinson (1900-1910s) 10th and 11th all time scorers respectively
- Harry Chambers and Dick Forshaw (1910-1920s) 9th and 12th all time scorers
- Gordon Hodgson (1920s-1930s) 3rd all time scorer
- Billy Liddell and Jack Balmer (1940s-1950s) 4th and 14th all time scorers
- Roger Hunt and Ian St. John (1960s) 2nd and 15th all time
- Kevin Keegan and John Toshack (1970s) 16th and 17th all time
- Kenny Dalglish (1970-1980s) 6th all time
- Ian Rush (1981-1996) 1st all time
- Robbie Fowler (1993-2002, 2006-07) 5th all time
- Michael Owen (1997-2004) 8th all time
- Fenando Torres (2007-2011) 19th all time
- Luis Suarez (2011-present) 34th currently
Look at them forwards ffs, we've been blessed
Also Gerrard is 7th right now. He'll surpass Kenny soon, 10 goals behind.

Re: Luiz Suarez
Torres missed atleast double those 20 games man. His injury record with us was horrible.Natalie Portman wrote:if he scores 17 more goals for the rest of the season, he'll surpass Torres' goal tally for his 3.5 year at LFC (Same with Suarez time frame), despite having missed 20 games !!! through suspension
Although the comparison favours Suarez. (Torres was always the more clinical striker though.)
PL:
Suarez 86 games, 51 goals.
Torres 105 games, 65 goals.
All comps:
Suarez 106 games, 64 goals.
Torres 142 games, 81 goals.
Suarez poor goal to game return season under Dalglish and Torres' form under Hodgson both cancel each other.
Suarez deserves the credit though. He's played with mediocre players the whole time he's been here and management has been very very average too. He's carried us for 3 seasons now. Torres played with a prime Alonso, Gerrard etc. If we had Suarez in the 08/09 season I'm certain the league was ours. Remains an if though.
Torres and Suarez would of been amazing to watch. None the less, we were privledged to have watched them both.

Re: Luiz Suarez
Man forget Suarez, in 2008-09 we had Torres and Gerrard play together something outrageous like 16 times (7 of the 16 weren't even full matches). Had those 2 played a couple of more games together we would've comfortably won the league.

Re: Luiz Suarez
If we had Suarez, he would of been able to cover Torres though. Keane was sold after January, who did we have after that?
Luis could of played on the right hand side instead of Kuyt (Arbeloa was solid enough defensively), or even on the left hand side where Yossi / Babel and/or Riera were rotated.
We were too reliant on Torres and Gerrard going forward that season. We drew too many games because we didn't have anybody who can chip in with those 2. Maybe Kuyt, but even he had a poor goal return.
Iirc Rafa actually wanted Luis, but wasn't a fan of his behaviour. :X

Re: Luiz Suarez
Nah Kuyt, Benayoun, Riera, did more than enough for me on the wings. It wasn't about that. It was the fact that we had absolutely no quality replacements for Gerrard and specifically Torres. Keane was supposed to be that but he sucked balls and when we got rid of him, we were left with N'Gog ffs as our only viable option for ST. And that led to Kuyt being moved to ST most of the time Torres was injured, which was a lot, and we didn't have any quality back ups for Kuyt's RW position either. And Babel was shit that year.

Re: Luiz Suarez
They did okay, but not enough.
They didn't step up when we needed goals... we drew 3 games in a row in February or March and that gave United the edge. We were playing catch up after that.
Kuyt I think had the most goals after Gerrard and Torres, he scored 15 goals despite playing 50+ games.

Re: Luiz Suarez
15 goals from the wing is a very good return for Kuyt. Like wise for Yossi who had something like 9 goals. Alonso chipped in with 5, Riera got 5. Keane had 7. Babel with 4, N'Gog with 3. We had 11 goals from all of our defenders (Agger, Hyypia, Carra, Aurelio, Dossena, Arbeloa). The team imo did very well again. Again it was the fact that Torres and Gerrard, our 2 best players, each missed a third of our matches.
Also that 3 draw period in February or whenever it was had both Gerrard and Torres playing. And 2 of those Everton and Wigan we were winning until late in the game and we conceded in like the 85th+ minutes.
I think the 4 draws in 5 games around November/Decemberish without Gerrard and Torres was what killed us. Fulham, West Ham, Hull City and Arsenal Also the two losses that whole season (Spurs and Middlesbrough) we didn't have either Torres or Gerrard in them.
So basically my premise that had Gerrard and Torres played a couple of more games that season together would've won us the league is on point.
Suarez was not necessary.

Him being in the squad would of helped is all I meant...
No point going on about it. Thing of a past and all that. I get depressed every time I watch that season review nowadays.

Re: Luiz Suarez
yeah same, I think at the end of the day we lost due to luck. If luck favored a bit more with injuries to Gerrard and Torres. If that legit Stevie's goal against Stoke stood. If that Italian c*nt (forget his name) didn't score that last second winner for United against Villa. If we didn't concede that penalty to Wigan in 85+ minute. If we didn't concede that goal to Everton in 88th minute. So many ifs, just a bit of luck and we could've won.

Re: Luiz Suarez
Easily the best forward in the league now that RVP is in decline. Aguero is legit too, but I dread to think how many goals Suarez would get if he was in that City team. He would be putting up Messi numbers. I really, really hope Madrid sign him in the summer.
