Re: Great competition back then
Sure 1994 was a great tournament but back then i didnt manage to folow all that games, i mostly watched highlights of that tournament. 98 world cup was the first i watched entirely.
2002 is way below 98 in terms of competition and quality.

Re: Great competition back then
98 or 02 were easily some of the better world cups in recent years
And please don't start with the 60's and 70's, football back then was dire

If you watched 98 and 94 you would realise why 2010 was average tournament.

Germany and Uruguay were worth watching in 2010. They carried that tournament entertainment wise. Ghana as well in a "home team" sense.

Re: Great competition back then
2010 without the annoying as f**k Vuvuzela's was an attrocious tournament with big teams flopping and little teams putting everyone behind the ball.
Add in the Vuvuzela and there were times I considered not watching it.
P.S Let's not get into the old is gold theme and say that the first world cups were the best and it declined from then on in.

2010 was the worst WC I have watched and I have been watching since 1982.

I didn't said 98 was the better of them, i think especially 82 with Paolo Rossi's Italy and was a great world cup.
I just said that 98 is the first i watched in full, and i doubt you watched live 82 and 86

2010 was just...
Excluding the boring final 06' wasn't that bad.
02' could have been better. > Brasil won.. but still
98' turned me on.

Not live but I watched it in full. My dad had tapes and as a kid I didn't know who won or what the scores where so it as close to the real thing as it could get.
I watched 70 in full much later when I already knew what the scores were but it was still great to watch.

Re: Great competition back then
2006 was very exciting. Zidane's last hurrah beating the Brazilians and Italy beating Germany in Germany were the icing on the cake.

Those tapes are pricelless.
It always seems that in past times football was better, but go and watch Brasil-Italy 2:3 in 1982...it is really hard to find something like that these days.

Re: Great competition back then
Tape wise, Germany-Italy 1970 WC 3-4 semifinal is probably the best game ever World Cup wise. The video is poor but it is the most exciting game in my opinion.

Re: Great competition back then
Yeah kudos to my dad. He really scored with those.
The mentality towards football was different back then, games were much more open then they are now and as a result more fun to watch.
Blame it on lack of real defensive strategies or quality of defenders or whatever. Bottom line is that it was entertaining.

Re: Great competition back then
I am not sure about that, i think that in 80's and 90's defenders and defending in generaly have been class above then today.
It is however almost imposible to compare if football was better then or now.

Re: Great competition back then
Good teams defend and attack together these days. It's a bit different than before where there were more specialists playing.
Football is at the very least different now. Arguing whether is was better or worse than before is too subjective IMO. It's still fun to watch overall.

Re: Great competition back then
Hahaha I was just turning 2 years old when 98' rolled around XD don't have tapes either cause nobody really cared for football in my family yet.
2002 I was 6 and just recently started playing. Heard about it and we watched it a little, but I didn't give an F about pro football yet. Just dominating the weekend games
2006 I had watched a lot of, and was a great tournament, except for the finals. Had to watch Zidane (my hero, despite being a Barca supporter at the time) get a red and see France lose to Italy who I hated at the time. Ragequit and didn't even watch the celebration after the PK's.
Watched almost every single game of 2010, but due to various things, missed maybe 3 or so. Decent tournament IMO. Didn't hate it as much as many other people, perhaps that's cause I didn't mind the vuvuzelas haha.
Yeaahhh. That's my story
