New Argentina Coach
Alejandro Sabella
Argentina on Thursday appointed Alejandro Sabella as national team coach to replace sacked Sergio Batista, the federation's general secretary Jose Luis Meiszner announced.
"The decision has been taken. Sabella is the choice," Meiszner told official news agency Telam.
Argentina's Copa America quarter-final exit to Uruguay earlier this month cost Batista his job even though he had only replaced Diego Maradona just eight months earlier.
Batista was vilified in the press for not seeming to know his best team -- he chopped and changed after a poor start before Carlos Tevez, whom he dropped after two games, returned to miss the decisive spotkick against Uruguay.
As a player, Sabella had brief stints with Sheffield United and Leeds. Before coming into the frame as Batista's successor he had been in line to take charge of Al Jazira in the United Arab Emirates.
Sabella, who is 56 and who began his playing career with River Plate in his home city of Buenos Aires, won the Copa Libertadores with Estudiantes two years ago.
That success was instrumental in pushing him to the front of the queue to replace Batista, who was dumped after proving unable in his sole tournament in charge to end a trophy drought at senior level going back to 1993, though he did steer the Olympic side to glory in 2008

Sabella is a good coach, and a fantastic improvement over Batista, Maradona and Basile. I would have preferred Bianchi, but I'm ecstatic to have someone competent in charge once again.

They make it sound more like hooking up with a new girlfriend than acquiring a football coach

Well, let's how this turned out. He is an improvement over Batista but can he bring the best out of Messi? Let's see, should be interesting.

Sabella coaching career:
2009-2011 Estudiantes
2011 Al Jazira
2011- Argentina
Wiki.
Anyone else surprised by his short CV and overall lack of management experience from properly big circles? On paper this looks to me like Maradona and Batista all over again.

He has some experience which is an improvement over Batista. Let's hope he's not wack in his call up choices as Maradona and Batista were, and actually forms a coherent team using top available talent.

whoever negged me... you seriously must be stupid if you think Argentina have any shot of beating us for La Copa Rocca..
You do know the stipulations of this cup?? Both teams can only field domestic based players. I'm pretty sure our league and players are better than Argentina's.

Should have gone for Bianchi. Maybe I should ask if Bianchi wanted the role...

Bianchi should have gotten the job. I'm surprised they didn't even want him first, it was rumoured that he was interested too.
