Post by El Gunner on Mon Oct 21, 2019 3:14 pm

It’s hard to give an objective assessment of a referee’s performance when you support one of the teams he is overseeing, but the statistics paint a picture of a whistler more inclined to punish the away side in this match.

Manchester United only had 32.1% of the possession, their second lowest figure in a home league match since 2003/04 when records began, according to Opta. The only time it has been lower was in this fixture last season, with the home side content to let Jürgen Klopp’s side have the ball and challenge them to break them down in both matches.

Yet despite dominating ownership of the ball at Old Trafford to near-record levels, in the opinion of Martin Atkinson it was Liverpool who were far the dirtier side. He penalised the visitors for 14 fouls where the home side only committed six infringements. For context, the foul count last season was 15-17, which perhaps seems more in line with expectation.

According to the referee, United didn’t commit any fouls between the 22nd and 72nd minutes. As unlikely as that sounds, not least as they made nine of their match total of 11 tackles in that period, it was also to prove very costly to Liverpool when the home side went ahead after 36 minutes.

The referee was really bad and this is a good summary. We lost because we didn't turn up and Solkjaers 5 man at the back negated our depleted attack. What's the problem?

Its an absurd way of arguing for referee favoritism. What do the possession stats have to do with the number of fouls called?

I didnt watch the game and that write up gives me 0 context as to if the ref was biased or not, but it does give me an indication that the writer is biased.

Atkinson's decision making favoured Man United, in all the little decisions and challenges which he constantly decided against Liverpool (and in a hard fought game this is a huge factor for momentum), and also of course in the big one, just plain ignoring a blatant foul in the build up to the goal. I'm not even going to start with the VAR farce.
So, while Liverpool were by no means very good, the referee robbed them of 2 points.

Sheffield United's organization is top class. Least goals conceded in the PL alongside Liverpool. We were able to beat them 1-0 through a keeping error.

Easy 3 points for Sheffiled United. Never in doubt.

Knew Arsenal weren't going to score as soon as I saw the players playing tiki taka at the back with no intent to play forward.

Emery being a bum makes that an easy prediction too.

I think Pepe will come good eventually, but he has looked lost in recent matches. Like with many other top teams right now, I think Arsenal is quite far off the ideal balance between having relatively experienced veterans who know the club and the competition well, and young talents who are still adapting and developing their game.

Have no doubts about Pepe, the miss was awful but was our best attacking player. With a more balanced team under a better manager, he will shine. I just worry the Arsenal board are taking too long, because they want to be #classy.

Somehow I felt like Arsenal played better than Liverpool played against Sheffield Utd Laughing and seeing the match I really thought that they would go on to win 2-1.

Depleted squad? Yea you were missing a grand total of one player. Any idea how many ours’ were missing?
I am kind of ashamed to defend having 30% possession at home against Pool of all teams. But if not that approach, kindly tell me what was he supposed to do, in the state we are in? Stop talking bs like your dear Jurgen Klopp.

We are teams that are at opposite ends quite literally. One flying high top of the table and the other in a free fall even risking a slide into relegation. You are THE inform team. One of the best attacking teams in the league. Where as we are the worst in the regard. Ole is under immense pressure and had he lost that match, he would have shown the door most probably. How can you seriously complain despite all this and claim we were negative.

And having said that, the approach Ole took of sitting deep and counter attacking is THE best way to play against Liverpool. Its proven time and again. You guys are no Man City who can unlock teams through skill. You need teams coming at you so that your superior defense and ball player keeper can feed them quick balls to your fast forwards. If anything I am wondering why other teams who got supposedly better quality in their ranks than us are not doing the same against you.

The thing is didn’t want to get dragged into this. I mean whats the point defending us at the state we are in. But I was growing tired of this constant drivel from you and many pool fans. At the end of the day you should thank Marcos ficking Rojo for keeping your undefeated run intact and just move on. Enjoy being top of the table and stop obsessing over United that much. Right now, we are not your competition. We got the Norwiches and Sheffield’s to worry about lol, not the big fishes like City and Lpool.

the reason other teams dont play the same against us as you did is because even teams like norwich without tony pulis as manager are more brave than that. norwich would look at the mighty man u playing at home vs liverpool and think we have to have a better go than that. and that is where liverpool man u and norwich are at this moment.

better to die on your feet than live on your knees. but the norwich game plan with the 9oomil worth of talent that man u have would see norwich higher than 13th imo.
