Yes, you are correct, it was called Ligapokal ("league cup") but it was actually some sort of extended version of the German Supercup (= Community Shield).

It was put in place instead of the Supercup (league champion vs cup winner) at some point, included a few more teams from the top of the league, and then was replaced by the Supercup again.
