I don't know any other team sport where subs are limited.

What's the argument in football for having only three subs? How does it make the game better?

I imagine it's so that the least amount of time is wasted on exchanging subs.

But imagine what kind of high pressing free flowing football Bielsa could play with limitless subs Proud

Subs are meant for injuries, but a team rarely suffers 3 injuries in the same match

It's a risk taken by the coach

And it's better for it.

Besides, I like the idea of (ideally) putting your best XI out there and having them face off the whole match. With unlimited subs, it invariably turns part of the manager's job into trying to exploit mismatches throughout the game, tinkering with lineups in the game and detracts from the user experience of watching Messi or Eriksen or Hazard out there for ninety minutes.

Also makes the subs that much more valuable, and making good, impactful substitutions is an aspect of the managerial job that should be evaluated.

We maybe should allow the thought that football is the greatest, most popular sport in the world because of the way it is, not because of the ways it isn't like other sports.

Rugby has limited substitutions btw. 7 in Rugby Union and 10 in Rugby league. Also, Aussie Rules rules (lol) permit a team to 4 interchange players and a max of 90 total interchanges per game. For reasons only an Aussie can say, they changed the word "substitute" with "interchange".

The limit to substitutes is not an uncommon practice.

Thats a bit narrow-minded, doesn’t mean there’s no room for the game to improve

I like the 4th substitution in extra time now. In regular time it doesn't feel like there should be more. What would be the point.

It would create even more imbalance between big and small teams. Allegri could choose to bring out a second team of fresh top players while SPAL already struggled enough to get a quality first 11.

I dont like the 3 subs maximum either. I get the whole argument of " not wasting time " but with the introduction of VAR ; it does not make sense anymore .Imo up to 5 changes should be allowed.

Let's say all you 3 changes are made and one on your player is injured by the opponent. You cannot even replace him : Nonsense

At least now there is a possiblity for a 4th player to come in in extra time.

You would change your mind once this goes into effect and your team is losing 0-1 and the opposing manager makes 5 changes in the 92nd minute lol

how about 4 sub in regular time plus 1 extra (and only 1 allow) in injury time.

2 more for matches that have extra time.

definitely better in long run match wise or season wise.

but mostly coach dont even use up all full 3 sub each matches, so, i dont know.

The ref can never properly make up for the time lost, really, and it also disrupts the entire flow.

Anyway, as terrance said, coaches rarely use all 3 subs so why would they suddenly start using 5?

No point in fixing something that isn't broken.

It gives smaller teams a bigger chance to compete and win. Imagine you're a team with modest means and you're already struggling to keep up with a very strong side. Then out of the corner of your eye, you see their manager preparing to replace his entire starting eleven (who happen to be world-class) with another 11 world beaters; fresh, well-rested and hungry to feast on the tired legs of your players who have no proper replacements on the bench, never mind a world class one at that.

How is that different than any other sport with unlimited substitutions?

I think there should be option for additional substitutions if games went into extra-time.

There already is an extra substitution for extra time in some knock out competitions now (World Cup, right?) and I think the rest will follow suit soon.
That is enough IMO.

One of the reasons futbol is my favorite sport is the game is not only a display of talent, but also a strategical or tactical challenge. Changing the substitution rules would take away from the strategical challenge. Therefore, I would be opposed to any rule changes.

Not really sure who started this discussion, but I suspect it is an American. I have an American friend who is a casual soccer (futbol) fan and he is constantly suggesting rule changes as he thinks there isn't enough goals which he thinks makes the game boring in comparisons to other American sports!

Funny because the most boring sports to watch are US-Football and baseball. Kick off, commercials, 3 actions, commercials, punt, commercials and so on until a highlight occurs then everyone wets their pants.

Baseball is even worse in terms of loss of time, i usually watch it as a background sound.
