It’s twisted. Me and ElG watched it before Midsommar I think.

A bit late to the party, but I watched the Martian last night. If you really enjoy space, I highly recommend this one. Probably the best space-based movie since Interstellar.

The Martian was amazing. It was one of my favorite movies of 2015. It got a bunch of hype for like 3 months when it got released and then all talk about it just disappeared.
2015 was an incredible year. So it's easy to see how it got overshadowed.
My top 5 that year:
Spotlight
Sicario
The Martian
Mad Max
Ex Machina
DoC, if you haven't seen Arrival(2016), check it out. It's not exactly a space movie but it's incredible sci-fi that fits this category of space-related movies. It's also better than Interstellar imo.

Interstellar is GOAT.
"That's not mountains ... They're waves ..."
"I knew .... because my dad promised me ..."
FFS, the best space movie ever.
Don't @ me with boring 2001 Space Odyssey.

If only the ending was better, I would agree.

Re: The Movie House - Part 11
I'd say Gravity has more in common with The Martian than Arrival or Moon. The thing I enjoyed most about it was how low sci fi it was, almost everything was based on real science and technology just within our grasp, and Gravity kind of falls into that same category. Still great movies though.

Just finished watching Arrival and I've come here to thank you both for suggesting it to me. I really loved it!M99 wrote:

Will definitely check out Moon and Ad Astra as well, but not tonight though. My head is still spinning after I burnt the few brain cells I had to figure out the true hidden meaning of Arrival

That's the thing, even if you're like me and are mostly interested in space movies in its strictest form (planets, space travel, black holes,...), it doesn't really get in the way of you enjoying Arrival because it's different in a pleasant way.
- Spoiler:
- The moment you realize that the chick has developed the ability to perceive time in a non-linear way just like those aliens and is now capable of experiencing her past, future and present all at once, you realize you're not in the presence of another boring Sci-Fi movie with just weird-looking, greenish aliens and a classic war between humans vs a space invader.
Also, and this is my favorite part, I loved the fact that the movie was able to perfectly demonstrate how destructive and paranoid humans are by nature.

Re: The Movie House - Part 11
I loved Arrival for how it played with the Sapir-Whorf hypothesis (linguistic determinism/relativism), probably the single most awe-inspiring and stimulating theory i learned in my university career.

Re: The Movie House - Part 11
Honestly, Denis Villeneuve deserve so much credit for translating linguistics and its subtleties into the big screen in a way mass audiences can coherently understand. Especially when it was a fake language lol. Arrival was so very complex that only a few filmmakers can deliver a film like this.
Villeneuve is the king of sci-fi atm. DoC check out Blade Runner 2049. It's incredible sci-fi.
I absolutely cannot wait for his vision of Dune next year.
His transition from suspense/thrillers like Prisoners/Sicario/Enemy/Incendies to sci-fi has been incredible. He was the best at that and now he's the best at this. This dude is one of the best directors of all time. Here's to hoping he goes back to making another thriller because it's my favorite genre.

Re: The Movie House - Part 11
Both are great, no need to bash another to big up another. Kubrick together with Leone are the only directors incapable to direct less than good movies. Tarantino may yet join that group. Yes, Death Proof too is a good movie.futbol wrote:Interstellar is GOAT.

Re: The Movie House - Part 11
https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0045758/ okay sure^^
also not that big on Full Metal Jacket, especially the second part of the film
I also feel Kubrick's films are overrated a bit because he was a visionary who made films completely different to his contemporaries. But just because something is different in scope and vision, doesn't mean it is necessarily always good and enjoyable.
It's nice to watch 2001 and The Shining, but i never felt an urge to go back and watch them again, or even consider either of them to be one of my favourites in their respective genres.
I love Eyes Wide Shut, that's easily my favourite Kubrick film, and then i really enjoyed A Clockwork Orange's unhinged mood.
