Watch him be in UEFA team of the year again with Alves because he saved that straight header from Kane.
Guy should be third choice at Juve.

He went to ground waaaaay too early there, was saving a shot that wasn't there. Would have saved Son's botched effort easily otherwise. Totally at fault.

That's why he still starts because everyone else is, well, rubbish.

He literally is
Not even buying the 'let others I.E Dona get time early' he plays every game for Milan. Poverty international friendlies won't help or hinder him.

Probably just didn't want his last memory with the national team to be failing to qualify for the WC with Sweden
There's also this:
Gianluigi Buffon has more caps (175) than 20 members of the current Italy squad combined (166)
And also, he said for Astori he would continue, which I also understand in terms of a gesture of respect
Anyways, the national team is still very much in shambles. We can sit and talk about Buffon playing a meaningless friendly in 2018 when the next major tournament that Italy can partake in is the Euro of 2020, we could, we could also talk about how Candreva and Parolo are still getting call ups too, it just doesn't matter.
Buffon's decline is very evident, sadly. He was a liability against Tottenham for example, otherwise a relatively good season but these moments are defining. Against Argentina today, he actually made some good saves until that Banega goal, it is what it is.

Re: Buffoon would sooner drag Juve and the Italy NT than retire
Shambolic performance and the only reason Buffon is still playing is because of sentimentality. Right now Italy has nothing to play for so Buffon will play every single game until he retires. Whether he is better than Donnarumma is a strange argument. Donnarumma is a kid. He just turned 19. He deserves a shot, and will certainly get that down the line. Donnarumma isn't perfect and his positioning shows his youth/inexperience, but he's still becoming a great keeper for Milan despite some faults.
Buffon though is playing until he retires. As far as the national team being a different animal... yeah that's true. For Italy it's a dead horse.
By the 2020 Euros? Italy will flop miserably in that one like it has been doing. Parolo, De Sciglio, Candreva... great bunch.

Calm down you clowns. As if Italy have a string of De Gea's and Neuer's waiting to take over LMAO. He's going to retire at the end of this season anyway. He's hardly the problem.
Look at the bigger issue. A big NT like Italy have Immobile as their starting striker. What else did you expect ? They're never going to get anywhere with these mental midgets like Insigne and Immobile.

Buffon, despite his age, is still better than the next best Italian GK (and whether that person is Donnarumma is very debatable).
Italy has nothing to play for now, and Buffon is going to play until he retires.
Frankly, if he changes his mind in retiring for next season, he should still play for the NT until someone else prove themselves.
Top 10 GK at the moment.

It must be a matter of principle
You are so old
You sucked (man, Italy reached their worst result ever)
You must go away
But that's Italy
We'd have continued also with Matthaus after Euro 2000 because how you can send away a GOAT etc etc

One treat of truly great players is to know when to step down
He will be remembered as an all-time great one way or another but he should at least just spare Juve/Italy the embarrasment when they crash out of CL/WC because of his poor performance in crucial moments of the season.

Re: Buffoon would sooner drag Juve and the Italy NT than retire
Donnaruma is still a teenager. He needs more playing time. Scufett, Meret and Loria are also very young, between 18 and 21. Buffon is still a very good goalkeeper, there are very few national teams that have better goalkeepers than Buffon even at his age. Italy is in good shape with respect to goalkeepers. The young guys I mention are the 6'4" + tall goalkeepers that need some time to mature and fill out. Perin is the smaller, acrobatic Casillas type GK, they are great but do not tend to not last as long at the top as their athleticism, which is their key asset, tends to deteriorate as they age.

Re: Buffoon would sooner drag Juve and the Italy NT than retire
Donnarumma has some positional issues and sometimes rushes out of his box in a bad way, but he is certainly getting up to speed with regular playing time at Milan (and I hope he does stay at Milan because he wouldn't be guaranteed a starting position like at Milan) and has been noted for making many remarkable saves and keeping many clean sheets.
I know people have had hopes for prior keepers... like Sirigu and Marchetti... but neither ever came close to replacing Buffon (certainly not when Buffon was younger). Sirigu has basically disappeared since he left PSG and flopped pretty badly in Spain.

No matter how great you are time is always greater and the time has eventually come for the peerless Buffon. Not retiring at the end of this season, at least effectively, would be ridiculous as far as I am concerned.

It really sucks that the game had to be decided with a penalty after Juve tactically outmatched RM for the majority of the match. That said, Benatia and Buffon both let their team down, and I hope Warrior doesn’t sleep tonight That was an ice cold, elite level penalty. CR has nerves of steel.
