I just watched it on Dailymotion. Seems like another Edward Snowden case.
It doesn't tell you much about what the Dark Net ventures around besides sales of illegal drugs. And it's more of a focus on Silk Road and the guy? (group of people?) with the pseudonym Dead Pirate Robert who created it.

I was not impressed by the speed of the onion routing, so I put tor away after my curiousity was satisfied quite a while ago :coffee:

The Coen Brothers are writing the movie. Just announced some days ago.

The dark net are certain sites that you can only access via the Tor Browser... and that's because the Tor Browser is completely anonymous and untraceable.  No government has been able to crack (nor will they).

It's free.  Here's the link:
https://www.torproject.org/index.html.en

Example of a dark sites?  https://thehiddenwiki.org/

I personally only use it for an email client because I'm tired of email companies selling out or getting hacked with my personal info.  They can't with the email servers on the dark web.

@RWO. It's not about speed. It's about anonymity. It attracts the wrong crowd for sure. But it's useful for things like email as i mentioned. A lot of people (like me) think it's insane that your entire life is so easy to hack into and I'm taking steps against it.

You'd be surprised

And guess what, the three most "dangerous" breaches (where the passwords were not salted hashes) for me came from Adobe, Google (Gmail) and Electronic Arts (Origin).

That site claims that I got pwned through Myspace. I've never owned or registered a Myspace account, nor do I recall ever having anything to do with Myspace hmm

I watched some of those Youtube creepypasta videos about the Deep Web, and a few Deep Web facts/sites videos. Holy shit. I don't know how much of it is true, some of it is definitely made up, but the stories are seriously messed up.

Some of it is fascinating, like the vast amounts of mythical and historically meaningful knowledge that's supposedly hidden there (like the location of "Atlantis"), but a lot of the sites seem to be related to crime, or incomprehensively evil acts committed by human monsters - most of which have apparently been moved to something called Shadow Web, due to American government agencies driving them away. Not that it made me any more likely to download TOR out of curiosity. That place honestly sounds like a living nightmare, and the some of the Youtube/reddit stories creeped me the F out. Like this one:

Not safe for anyone.:

I did use Tor and like RWO mentioned its damn slow on the phone (dont know about the pc).

Even amid the excruciatingly slow browsing speed I found some very interesting and creepy stuff in there. Like for example there was a forum where people rated escort models from personal experience and stuff. Sadly I couldnt get in to view the actual pages as it failed to load each time killing all hope. I still has it, i mean the app(s). But will probably delete soon.

If you're going to use regular email clients, a general rule of thumb is to change password every month and never the same one twice.

I also use VPN and encrypt my DNS...

VPN is self explanatory. For DNS, follow this:

They take dick pics and record sex tapes just as well as us common folk, TBH.

Probably why they're so easily hacked.

As you said, it's just way too much effort. Monthly password change, FFS? Do you know the amount of passwords I already have to memorize, Sports? Last time I had to change a password monthly, I just put in the same password and then reduced the numerical part by one. So it was like "podolskigod100" and the next month "podolskigod99" Laughing

@sports

I know that tor is about anonymity. But frankly, as soon as you use a mobile phone and electronic cash you give away probably even more information than if you browse the web via VPN with noscript activated in you browser and not logging in to the usual suspects like Google, facebook, twitter, instagram etc. (Facebook is particularly annoying by trying to force people to login to view content - luckily there is "inspect element" and the possibility to simply kill off the login box ^^).

Depends what phone you use and what kind of encryption you force on it.  I don't use any Apple products and I have a modded version of Android on my mobile phone.  If someone really really really wanted to crack through my mobile phone, they could.  But I guarantee you that they won't want to go through the effort...  plenty of people who blissfully ignore privacy issues out there (millions if not billions).  So i get left alone.

In any case, something rather catastrophic is guaranteed to happen in the near future that will bring into focus how widespread hacking is and how government illegally keeps tabs on everyone...  so all the stuff I have to spend effort doing now will become the standard after that because the public will demand it.  I'd just rather not be a victim if I can avoid it, which is what all this is about.

I'm not looking to be completely safe.  I just want to make things difficult enough that the resources hackers would need to spend to break through my firewalls wouldn't be worth it.

All this is really not that difficult either.  The effort and time is negligible imo.
