Re: Turkey and Erdogan Watch
Talked to a Turkish guy who works for an energy company last weekend and he said one big problem is that Erdogan engineered an huge construction boom, a construction bubble, as among his closest buddies are construction company owners, and that bubble has now burst

Yes and half of those shitty boom-builds will wash down into the Bosporus and Black Sea when the first real rain hits. Turkey was doing so great, I'm proper mad at European Right-Wingers, too, this wouldn't have happened if Europe hadn't stonewalled Turkeys applications to join the EU in the pre-Erdogan years when they were arguably doing better than Hungary or Poland are doing now...

But he won't, because he's a dictatorial madman, as well as a theocratic hack, and you should never have defended him in the first place, though.

What's the situation in Algeria? Any probability of a (however small) qualitative change?FennecFox7 wrote:I’ve defended erdogan quite a bit, but if he lost, he lost. it is what it is and he needs to accept it

The situation in Turkey is more complicated then that. If the west didn’t want to undermine any and every muslim country striving for success maybe Erdogan wouldn’t be so successful. just food for thought.

Algeria’s situation largely depends on the FLN leaving and that depends on France.
Unfortunately there is a bitter resentment over the Algerian War from some parts of France (Le Pen, I’m looking at you), and France is doing everything they can still to control Algeria and drain her oil and natural gas. France still has problems (and for the record I love France as a country). @sportsczy can attest to that.
France still controls Algeria via proxy dictators.. but this time they have the threat of millions of young algerian people emigrating to France. So, the ball is in Macrons court. Let’s see what happens.
My hope is that
1. The protests remain peaceful. So far.. So good
2. We don’t make the same mistake as the 80’s/90’s and put islamists in power. Actually, there was an islamist group that tried to jump in the elections but the people basically told them to fuck off.
3. Important to note the young people want democracy, secularism, and identity. Algeria is not an arabic country.. being true to our roots and recognizing we are an Amazigh country with an arab influence is key to uniting us imo. Many of these young people are educated, college students who just want a better future
Algeria has incredible potential.. but it’s gonna be a rough ride
Tunisia made it work, and Morocco isn’t doing so bad.

BBC wrote:Mr Imamoglu has won 53.6% of the vote with nearly 95% of ballots counted, according to the state-run Anadolu news agency.
His opponent, former Prime Minister Binali Yildirim, has conceded defeat. "I congratulate him and wish him good luck," he told supporters.

TBH at first I thought why the fuck they didn't rig the re-eleciton, but they probably did, and Imamoglu probably had like 75% of the actual vote pre-rig...

Pretty much.
The western media is in meltdown because Turkey isn't a pushover like all the pathetic other muslim countries and won't take any shit from anyone. The Kurds tried to literally overthrow Erdogan and his OWN PEOPLE protected him. Finally a muslim leader that doesn't just kiss Europe's and USA's ass.
Good for Erdogan tbh.

Re: Turkey and Erdogan Watch
Yeah wtf Fennec, Erdogan is turning Turkey into a dictatorship after it's been a working democracy for close to 30 years, and the Kurds were perfectly fine fighting ISIS in Iraq and Syria, having made assurances to their western allies to not touch Turkey, this isn't defence of any kind, this is Erdogan trying to wipe the Kurds off the map.

Re: Turkey and Erdogan Watch
While I appreciate the Kurdish fight against ISIS (not like they had any other choise mind you), I really don't get this romanticization of the Kurdish cause in Western media. They got great PR I tell you.
Balkanization of middle east has been a long time policy of the west and cough cough I_____L (ISIS was just one of the tactics they played) and one of them is Kurdistan getting their own country (hence Kurds and Israelis are great allies as they both support each other's objectives), but if Kurds want to have their land, they better learn how they protect it from invasion. You want your own country? learn how to defend it, instead of always being reliant on a sugar daddy to do it for you.
I've visited Iranian Kurdistan many times when I was a kid and they are very nice and generous people. Ideally, they'd get a federal sort of status that they can practice their own language and culture there (which sadly is being denied to them now), but I'm STRONGLY opposed to separatist movements in the region to create yet even more failed states and tension.
Taking no sides in this specific affair. And what Western people fail to realize is that in MidEast we don't really care about democracy or not democracy, it's about being effective and improving people's lives for the most part. Iran's BEST ruler was one of the biggest dictators and authoritarians (Reza Shah at same time as Atta Turk). Yes, he was a dictator, but he got shit done and improved the country so much, unlike the CURRENT dictators. I still think as a NET, Erdogan has been a positive for Turkey despite seriously going off the rail in the last few years.
I take an effective and caring dictator over a "democratic" do-nothing any day of the week. Ideal scenario is of course an effective and caring democratic choice.
