I quite like the look it as the two CMs are instructed to break forward into the channels and I think that suits the likes of Alli and Lingard. Sterling gets a free role so will hopefully be less predictable than he can be on the wing.

Tbh all banter aside I genuinely think we are going to do quite well.
For the first time in like 20 years we actually have a set style and system and actually have a team which plays like a team.
Even if we don't have as much talent as previous tournaments.

I will settle for getting through to the QF's, that's a big victory to me. Anything else I'd be a little disappointed in but eh. I agree with you though, I admit to not watching much of us under Southgate but he does seem the most competent manager we've had in a while. Also feels like for once there's not much pressure on the team as there aren't delusional expectations from the public being placed on them. Wasn't all that hyped for the tournament but I'm slowly coming around to it.

My expectations are basically play well and lose to a good team in the second round or quarters tbh.
I don't think we'll get knocked out by someone like Iceland for example.

Re: The Three Lions
There's a good chance we'd get Brazil or Germany in any quarter-final, so going out at that stage wouldn't be a bad tournament at all. However, I could see us losing to Poland or Colombia in the last 16 just as easily.
Whatever happens, this seems like the most settled group of players we've had in a long while. It's the first tournament I can think of where there isn't a big issue or debate leading up to the opening game. Euro 2016 had the whole Rooney in midfield thing, and Hodgson undecided on how to play Kane and Vardy together. Brazil 2014 was just a mess with Hodgson not having a clue how to set the team up, resulting in Rooney playing wide left ffs. Capello was sacked just before Euro 2012 and South Africa 2010... just lol.
Now, it's clear what everyone is doing. We know our first choice eleven, how we're going to play and the roles others will play off the bench. We're not shoehorning players into odd positions just to fit someone in. Helped of course by the low expectations and general mediocrity of the squad.
At the same time, I've seen enough tournament failures to know that we can get a bad case of stage fright very easily.

Re: The Three Lions
So, this tournament was a success just for getting a lot people interested in England again. We came into it settled and left it with a lot more positives than we expected. I can't remember the last time we exited a tournament feeling genuinely proud and happy about the team. Considering very few people were convinced about Southgate's ability to manage the team, nevermind the state of the squad, we've done incredibly well.
That said, there's a lot of work still to be done if we want to make this a consistent thing and not just a fluke run. The biggest issue in the team, as per usual, is the lack of midfield play. Offensively, it limits us in what we can do and makes us predictable. Defensively, we have no means of keeping the ball under pressure and settling a game down. Throughout the World Cup, we sucked teams out by passing it around at the back and played it direct to the forwards, who would then bring the runners into play. It's a decent gameplan, but we need more. It's the next step the team has to take.
To do this, we're going to need midfielders. This is where we're going to struggle, because there are very few players who could come up within the next two years. Our options would be:
Adam Lallana - The forgotten man who might not see much first team football at Liverpool for various reasons.
Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain - A miss for the squad and certain to return when he's fit.
Jack Wilshere - Feels like the boat has sailed for him, but if he does well at West Ham he's always an option.
Harry Winks - He's more a holding player than anything, but maybe he could play a different role for England. Needs to get back into the Spurs team first.
Lewis Cook - Has been in recent England squads and is playing consistently for Bournemouth now. Will be one to watch in the next two years.
James Maddison - Just signed for Leicester from Norwich and recently broke into the u21 side.
Ainsley Maitland-Niles - Not a playmaker, but a very composed passer with great athleticism and versatility. Could play DM or as a b2b CM.
Else where, this will be the last tournament for Young and Cahill. I expect Rose will reclaim his starting spot on the left, which means we're going to need a backup from somewhere. I can see Ben Chllwell of Leicester getting that spot. I hope Lascelles gets a call-up, and all eyes on Chambers and Holding at Arsenal to see if they can progress and step-up. Otherwise, the only other centre back who be called-up would be James Tarkowski.
The attack looks set, but maybe we could add more variety with Ademola Lookman and maybe Jadon Sancho, if he continues to impress for Dortmund.

Re: The Three Lions
Irony is Lascelles probably would have stopped both goals tbh.
But after watching us play I'm not sure he could play in this team tbh, we are really expansive in terms of the CBs bringing the ball out and I'm not sure he'd translate that well.
Better pure defender than any of our defenders though.

Re: The Three Lions
Not enough technical ability. This has been England's woe pretty much always since I've watched them. Even great midfielders like Gerrard, Lampard and Beckham were great for their ability to strike the ball, not for dribbling or ball control abilities. And it's the latter type of technical ability that is the basis for creativity, which England badly lacks.
I'd include wingers in your list of options, Jay. They can be the source of creativity just as well as central midfielders. Unfortunately that area is looking as bleak as or even bleaker than central midfield... Sterling is supposedly the best English winger at the moment, but his performances for England only manage to highlight how much he benefits from technically better players at Man City. Two goals in 43 appearances for England is a dire stat for Sterling.

Re: The Three Lions
Sterling might hot score for England but when he went off you saw his value.
Our build up play is absolutely terrible without him, we literally can't build attacks without him.

Re: The Three Lions
I'm going on the basis that 3-5-2 is here to stay, so wingers aren't really a priority.
I did mention Lookman and Sancho. Otherwise, we're surprisingly short on wing talent for a nation that's produced plenty in the last two decades.
There are some good young players coming up, but they're not going to be ready for Euro 2020. Maybe Murphy at Newcastle? Haven't seen that much of him but he's one of the few who could step up within the next two years.
We're more likely to see midfielders enter the squad.
