lol
The pure genius of Robben is that everyone knows what he's going to do, but they just can't stop him from doing it.

I can't believe he's still so athletic given his age and injuries.

The rest of the team clearly working hard and determined to get him into position and space to do his move, making runs, switching sides.
Lahm drawing away Pogba to get Robben 1v1 Evra etc
On top of that, Robben noticably frequently chooses to go to the right, to the goal line to make a cross these days, to show the defenders they can't just cover his inside.
Then - he cuts inside, lol.

I can only imagine what goes through a defender's head when he scores like that.
Barzagli, internal: He's going to his left, he's going to his left, he's going to his left...oh-oh shit...I ****ing knew it!

Re: Arjen Robben Appreciation Thread
IMO it was Robben's fault that Messi scored that goal against Boateng last season. Boateng thought Messi was going to cut inside like Robben does 100 out of 100 times in every training session. But when Messi pretended to cut inside and then actually went outside, Boateng's brain couldn't handle such sorcery so his body fell like a rotating dildo.

You could definitely make the argument that Robben could have won the MVP at the WC as well. I think he fades more into the background than almost any player because of his injuries when talking about the best players in the world.

He clearly has though, he doesn't have the 0-100 explosion he used to. Not that it matters as he's improved in other areas like his decision making and overall intelligence and he has Neymar-Suarez in front of him but i don't see anyone can say he's as fast as he was.
You are right, he clearly has. Look how easy defenders are catching him up nowadays... and this with the advantadge Messi has because he is carrying the ball, and we all know when you carry the ball you can accelerate, stop and run much faster than without it.
Messi is so much slower now that he barely dribles like he did in 09/10:
Top 5 most successful dribbles
267 Messi 14-15
264 Messi 10-11
233 Hazard 14-15
222 Messi 11-12
201 Messi 09-10

maybe he dribbles more, because defenders are catching him nowadays, and he has to dribble them again

don't give a crap about these stats. i've been watching messi for years and i can say with certainty that he is slower and also dribbles less now than let's say 10/11.

He might be a bit slower, but it's not "clear" at all.
And no, he doesn't drible less, it's obvious. Now he has more options, that's why it seems he dribles less.

Another example.
@ 9:00
That's Rami, a centerback hardly known for his speed, coming out of nowhere and tussling with Messi which forces him to pass the ball. This happens so often now. Always having to wrestle off defenders. Compare this to Neymar's dribble that led to Messi's first goal. Bellerin, one of the fastest players on the planet, couldn't get close to Neymar at all.
Huge speed difference. Messi wasn't the fastest player but he also wasn't this slow.

Example of 90+2 run against Sevilla after touring Africa and England, playing million full games straight after knee injury.
This was year ago with Barcelona.
Ran fastest in Liga: 1 Messi 2 Alba 3 Mathieu, Ran most: 1 Alba 2 Busquets 3 Rakitic [Marca]

You can also cherrypick these kind of plays from his past seasons, like vs. Maldini. The fact is that he dribles the same as previous seaons and he is not clearly at all slower.
You just have to look at that gif you posted, where Messi is never sprinting at top speed and is not far from Neymar's and Bellerin's top speed. If he is slower, it's marginally. At 28, you are not getting slower yet, otherwise Bolt, at 29, would be on a downhill.
You just make things up against all evidence for the sake of it.

Re: Arjen Robben Appreciation Thread
Of course you can sprint here and there after you walk most of the game. Messi's physical condition has decreased imo, he runs a bit more than the goalkeeper nowadays. However, is smart enough to manage the situation.
An athlete should be at the peak physically in the late 20's, and Messi runs as much as Totti.

I know what you mean and I used to think the same thing, because it happens much more often than it used to. But every so often he pulls out a burst of speed that's just as fast as he used to be all the time.
Like Free said, there's the goal against Athletic, there's the spanking he gave Hummels in the WC final, even his acceleration against Arsenal to win the penalty was insane, something we used to see every week from 2008-2012.
For whatever reason he doesn't use it as much, that's a fact. Maybe because he doesn't need to as Socur said, maybe it's because of injuries, maybe it's laziness. But he still has it, that is very clear to me.
