And the next big player who quits international duty is Frank Lampard who says good-bye to the English NT after winning 106 caps.

Juan Román Riquelme retires from football

Former Boca Juniors, Villarreal and Barcelona star Juan Román Riquelme has announced his retirement from professional football, just one month after leading first club Argentinos Juniors back to the Primera División.

"I have made the decision to no longer play football," the veteran confirmed in an interview with ESPN this evening, drawing the curtain on an illustrious playing career both inside and out of Argentina.

The 36-year-old playmaker ended his association with the La Paternal club after six months, during which he was key in leading the team to promotion to an expanded top-flight. Rumours had circulated linking Román with a move to the United States to join David Beckham's new Major League Soccer franchise.

Cerro Porteño had also asserted that they were close to taking the former Argentina international to Paraguayan football before the announcement.

But in his own inimitable style, Riquelme has decided that the time had come to call it a day.

"Now I am just a fan, I will go and suffer in the stadium. I hope this year is better. I am very pleased with the career I had," he explained, while asserting that he played in the "best team of all-time" for Boca.

"I enjoyed football to the maximum. I hope the people have enjoyed it alongside me. I tried to have a good time."

Riquelme so great that the only thing he did when he wasn't playing against Argie street urchins was lose a battle of nerves to Jens Lehmann.

After a successful career, consisting of many tap ins, many yellow and a hell of a lot of red cards. I am announcing my semi-retirement from the game, due to personal reasons AKA I can't be arsed getting up early

Hopefully this doesn't overshadow the retirements of the two players who are just as good as I am.

My biggest memory about Riquelme is when he was the Villareal leader to lead the Submarillo Amarillo against us while Veron was busy to quarrell with Sorin Mad he played an impressive match for leadership and Villareal overturned the qualification with that 1-0

Unfortunately for me this memory is biggest than the penalty kick missed against Lehman ffs

Not even close. Most Boca fans rightfully regard JRR as their best ever player because of all her achieved at the club. Maradona played at a time when Boca were scrubs and in his 4 seasons there only won one league title, compared to Riquelme's 5 league titles, 3 libertadores and 1 intercontinental.

Can't believe no one mentioned Rory Delap's retirement.

I could genuinely spend all day all days watching this over and over again.

He's one of the PL giants, should be hall of famed.

Marco Streller retired from football now. He managed to score 200 goals in his career (the shirt he got before his last match didn't take into account that he would score in his farewell match, too) XD
