Re: Official Copa America Thread
I'm not sure why people's expectations are high from us every year. Messi and Agüero aside, Colombia not only have a better squad but also a far better coach in Queiroz.
Comparatively, Scaloni was an interim coach who, because nobody wanted to take the job, was made permanent. And I see him getting sacked after Copa, a pattern that I've come to accept. We should have stuck with Batista/Sabella for longevity's sake at least, but in the end we either hired numpties with no clear strategies or good coaches who had zero ability to adapt to their squad.
Messi as the captain has been one of the most questionable appointments I've come to see in modern football, I really wonder what Barcelona and Argentina see in him. He might be the greatest player who has ever lived but for all I care the guy has zero charisma and zero ability to turn a demoralised squad around. And frankly it doesn't help when you see your captain walking on the pitch like he's having a stroll with his family in the Japanese Gardens.
And finally our squad is laughable, we have far overachieved with these lot. We had Guido Rodríguez and Renzo Saravia starting against Colombia ffs. Forget about Messi, even God himself can't win with such an awful squad We haven't even produced any good youngsters for a long time now, judging by our domestic league, our top young players in Argentina are actually Uruguayans and Colombians these days. Imagine reading that 20 years ago, people would have laughed at you. But it is true.
In the end I watch every match and cheer my team already knowing we won't win jack.

Argentina gave away all the coaches so they would make better teams than theirs in south America. Gareca, Pekerman and Sampaoli did great against Argentina.

You mean the team called Qatar consisting of players from Sudan, Portugal, Iraq, France, Algeria, Egypt and Tunisia? I guess.Perucho21 wrote:Qatar actually aren't that bad

Of all the coaches we've had recently I think only Sampaoli, Martino and Sabella had the right CV for it, and tbf Samp was terrible anyways. IDK why we continue to hire absolute scrubs like Basile, Maradona, Batista, and now Scaloni. It's clear that we can produce good coaches but we keep ignoring them or they're too young for the NT.
And FWIW Gareca flopped hard in Brazil, as much as I may like him.

Yeah just read up, I always thought two teams from CONCACAF qualified for it.
That's how it should imo, the CONCACAF should an year before the Copa and the two finalists should be invited for the CONEMBOL

The tournament is structured for 12 teams (3 groups of 4) and we only have 10 nations. So rather than invite suriname, french guiana and guyana (which would make it 13 teams and thus would be more confusing), we invite 2 guest nations
Edit: just read that french guiana is actually still property of the french. So I think we can get away with inviting France on a permanent basis since they do have french soil in South America The other 2 belong to concacaf, given that they're closer culturally and also at a football level to the Caribbean nations than the south american ones

Re: Official Copa America Thread
Why not something like Asia where there is a Qualifying round. Those 3 and the lowest ranked LA team can do a group stage to qualify. This can be so much more comfortable and fair imo

Re: Official Copa America Thread
Usually it was CONCACAF teams but recently the Gold Cup is the same month and tey usually send their amateur teams with their senior squads going to the gold cup. Before then Mexico was the best invitee and the closest to winning it.
Because of that they started inviting the Asian teams who are more likely to bring a more competitive side. I dont see a point in creating a qualifying round unless we combine the tournament with CONCACAF.
There will be another copa America next year because they want the tournament to take place on even number years and that will start in 2020. So itll take place in 2024 2028 and so forth.

Re: Official Copa America Thread
Just saw Messi's highlights versus argentina.
He barely received the ball in dangerous areas.. why does Argentina have such an awful team selection?
If messi can't move off the ball and make effective runs, he should play in the midfield and have another defensive minded midfielder playing. Argentina did this in '14 and they were let down by higuain and palacios awful finishing. I thought he was phenomenal in that world cup pulling the strings.

Re: Official Copa America Thread
Wtf are Qatar doing in a Copa America tournament?
After twenty years, Messi will be remembered for not winning a Copa America that had the likes of Qatar in it
That is how history will judge his NT career. So sad.

Honestly it's a rubbish concept.
Then why call it a Copa America in the first place. Call it Copa Internacional or something.
If they want more teams, they should just merge both North and South American football federations and make it one single competition for entire Americas. Geographically and culturally, it would make much more sense.

Re: Official Copa America Thread
People coming in with no knowledge of the situation and terrible ideas.
The Copa invites two guests from a different continent. Usually from North America, but not always. Japan has been there in the late 90s, was coming in 2014? before the tsunami hit and it got reshuffled.
The Gold Cup has been occurring simultaneously with the Copa lately. So if CONMEBOL invites north american teams then they may send a B team. So we got a Mexico team that didn't win a point in 2 editions of the tournament. Much better to have the finalists of the AFC.

Who wants that? neither of the continents want that.
Why not make an AFC/Eurocup merger then?
